From 1 July 2026, Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, or be following the relevant transition pathway. This is an important change for participants, families and providers.
What is changing?
The NDIS Commission has introduced mandatory registration for providers that deliver, manage and coordinate SIL. SIL is a package of home and living support for people with higher support needs. The new registration group is 0138 – Assistance with supported independent living.
The NDIS Commission says registered SIL providers must meet the core NDIS Practice Standards, the new SIL supplementary module and other conditions of registration, including certification audits where required.
What does this mean for participants?
Your SIL funding and plan do not automatically change because of the new requirements. The key practical step is to ask your provider whether they are registered, or whether they have applied to register.
- Ask whether the provider is registered for Assistance with Supported Independent Living (0138).
- If they are not yet registered, ask whether they have applied and what their transition plan is.
- Talk with the NDIA or your support network early if you are worried your current provider may not continue.
Important timing
The NDIS states that affected SIL providers must be registered or have applied to register by 1 October 2026. The exact transition pathway depends on the provider’s current registration status and the services they provide. Providers should check the NDIS Commission guidance directly.
What if you organise your own workers?
The NDIS explains that these changes do not apply where a participant chooses and manages their own support workers, including directing, planning and rostering those workers. This arrangement may not meet the definition of SIL.
